The Democratic National Committee (DNC) is going after former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley on the issue of abortion. In a new video released as Haley filed for the South Carolina primary, the DNC highlights her history of signing bills to limit abortion. The video, which is unique because it only targets Haley, recounts her statement as governor of South Carolina that she would always sign pro-life bills and couldn’t imagine a scenario where she wouldn’t. It also includes her recent affirmation that she would sign a national abortion ban.

The DNC’s spokeswoman, Sarafina Chitika, made it clear that they want voters to know that Haley is just as extreme on abortion as other potential 2024 candidates. They argue that Haley’s record, including a 19-week ban on abortions in South Carolina without exceptions for rape or incest, proves that she is out of touch with reproductive freedom.
The DNC plans to launch a paid advertising campaign on Facebook with the video to counter claims that Haley is a centrist. This push comes as Haley is gaining momentum in Republican primary polls and facing criticism from opponents who accuse her of pandering to the media and the Left.
While Haley maintains her anti-abortion stance on the campaign trail, she acknowledges that a federal abortion ban would require consensus in the country and Congress. Critics view her push for consensus as a sign of moderation on the issue, but Haley is still committed to signing federal legislation to limit abortion.
The DNC’s targeted attack against Haley aligns with her rise in Republican primary measures, where she has surpassed other candidates like Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL). DeSantis, along with Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), has called out Haley for supposedly catering to the media and the Left. As the campaign heats up, Haley and DeSantis have been engaging in a back-and-forth battle to secure the position as the candidate to challenge former President Donald Trump.
