Trump Lawyers Break Silence, Demand Crucial Protective Order Now!

In a not-so-surprising turn of events, former President Donald Trump and Special Counsel Jack Smith are already butting heads again. Just days after the third indictment was announced, Trump took to his favorite social media platform, TruthSocial, to declare that if anyone goes after him, he’s coming after them. Well, that didn’t sit too well with the prosecutors, who proposed a protective order to limit what Trump can discuss.

Of course, Trump’s lawyers weren’t about to let that happen without a fight. They asked for an extension, which was promptly denied, and now they’re asking for a narrowed limit on the protective order. They argue that the government’s proposal is “overbroad” and that it would unfairly restrict Trump’s political speech. They’re asking the court to only shield sensitive materials from public view and allow Trump to publicly disclose recordings and transcripts of witness testimony.

But this case isn’t just about protective orders and legal arguments. There are much bigger concerns at play here. Many have criticized the indictment for criminalizing speech and political activities, a clear violation of the First Amendment. Even Alan Dershowitz, a Democrat who has voted against Trump but has also defended him, believes that we have a right to know what evidence the government has against the former president.

To make matters worse, the case has been assigned to Judge Tanya Chutkan, who has a history of ruling against Trump. She has already denied him executive privilege in another case and has been harsh in sentencing January 6 defendants. This raises questions about her impartiality and whether she should recuse herself from the case. Trump has certainly been calling her out on TruthSocial, along with Special Counsel Smith.

It’s clear that Trump’s legal team has an uphill battle ahead of them. With a protective order looming and a judge who may not be sympathetic to their cause, they’ll need to come up with a solid defense strategy. And as legal analyst Jonathan Turley has warned, Trump’s fiery social media posts aren’t doing him any favors. But one thing’s for sure, this case is far from over, and it’s going to be a wild ride. Stay tuned!
