Former President Donald Trump’s legal team has arrived in Colorado to fight efforts to keep him off the state ballot. The trial, which is set to last five days, will determine Trump’s eligibility to run for office again. Jason Miller, a senior advisor with the Trump campaign, expressed his concern, stating, “They’re trying to put up their ‘steal’ curtain around Colorado. Democrats are trying to steal this race.”
The challenge to Trump’s eligibility was filed by a group of Colorado Republican and unaffiliated voters, supported by the liberal watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. They argue that Trump’s alleged role in the January 6th Capitol riot disqualifies him from holding office under the 14th Amendment, which prohibits individuals who engaged in insurrection or rebellion from running for office.

During the trial, witnesses, including police officers, testified to the violence they witnessed on January 6th. Trump’s legal team countered these claims by highlighting Trump’s calls for peace that day and arguing that the definition of insurrection is subjective.
The plaintiffs also attempted to introduce the House Jan. 6 committee’s final report as evidence, but Trump’s legal team dismissed it as a “poisoned” political document. They argued that Trump has not been convicted of insurrection and was acquitted by the U.S. Senate, and therefore should not be barred from running for office.
As with a similar case in New Hampshire, the Colorado case could potentially reach the Supreme Court. It would be the first time the court rules on the application of the 14th Amendment in relation to the Civil War-era amendment.
As conservatives, we must stand against any attempt to silence the voice of the people and exclude a qualified candidate from the ballot based on flimsy accusations. The Democrats’ efforts to keep Trump off the ballot are a clear attempt to undermine democracy and deny voters their preferred candidate. Let’s hope the Supreme Court sees through this political charade and upholds the principles of our Constitution.
