The education system, once a beacon of knowledge and development, now faces an unsettling crisis. In this new era of technology, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is threatening to dismantle the very foundation of learning. According to reports, while plagiarism concerns persist, AI-related misconduct is on a sharp upward trend. This is a dangerous development that should concern all of us as it points to a growing dependency on AI as a crutch for academic work instead of fostering genuine learning.
In recent years, universities have noticed a surge in academic misconduct involving AI tools like ChatGPT. Students are increasingly relying on these tools to complete assignments, leaving educators scrambling to keep up. AI isn’t teaching students critical thinking or problem-solving skills. Instead, it gives them a shortcut, which in the long run, makes them less capable thinkers. The stark reality is that students are graduating without the proper skills they need for the real world, having merely navigated their way through school by outsourcing their work to machines.
It’s quite telling to observe how the education system, supposedly the citadel of learning, seems challenged by this technological revolution. Many institutions are actively addressing this new form of cheating. Surveys show that a significant number of students agree that their institutions now have clear AI policies, indicating a shift in approach rather than business as usual. It doesn’t grasp concepts or synthesize information in the way a human mind can or should. So, what’s the solution, you ask? It’s simple. We need to return to the basics—homeschooling. By educating children at home, parents can ensure that their kids learn and understand the significance of education. One-on-one discussions, not digital shortcuts, should be the primary mode of learning. Asking students to explain their thoughts and ideas out loud reunites us with an age-old method of learning that tech can’t replicate. It is the dialogue between students and educators that fosters true understanding and intellectual curiosity.
Public schools and universities may struggle to adapt to AI, but parents have the power to take control now. With personalized, direct learning, AI becomes powerless, as it cannot participate in a genuine human interaction.
