In a Twitter exchange filled with plenty of sass and finger-pointing, fierce socialist Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Tesla CEO Elon Musk couldn’t help but exchange words over the handling of the escalating migrant crisis in New York City. After AOC took a swipe at Republicans for the federal government’s budget shutdown, Musk fired back at her, calling her intelligence into question. Ouch!
But instead of addressing the pressing issue at hand, AOC decided to defend her smarts by listing off her supposed accomplishments. From being the youngest woman to ever be elected to Congress, to investigating Cohen and leading the creation of a US Climate Corps, she wanted to make sure Musk knew she was no lightweight. Oh, and just to add a touch of flair, she included a hair-flipping emoji.
However, AOC’s attempt to sidestep the migrant crisis didn’t sit well with many New York City officials. Mayor Eric Adams warned that the cost of handling the crisis could balloon to a jaw-dropping $15 billion over just three years, potentially posing major threats to essential services like senior citizen meals and daycare.
And let’s not forget the heartbreaking stories that have emerged from this crisis. A Korean War veteran was forced to leave his nursing home to make space for illegal migrants. It’s clear that the situation has reached critical levels when over 100 New York hotels have been converted into shelters for migrants.
But it’s not just the Big Apple feeling the strain. Denver is also grappling with the high costs of housing illegal migrants – a whopping $25 million and counting, to be exact. The city’s expenses for migrant sheltering have already reached nearly $24.8 million, and officials are scrambling to figure out a plan.
Elon Musk, never one to shy away from speaking his mind, criticized the media for seemingly ignoring the migrant crisis. In fact, he’s planning on visiting the border himself to witness the situation firsthand, because actions speak louder than words. And with over 113,000 undocumented migrants flowing into New York alone, it’s abundantly clear that this is an issue that can no longer be swept under the rug.
It’s frustrating to see AOC dodging the real problems at hand and trying to divert attention with a laundry list of accomplishments. The migrant crisis is a genuine concern that requires urgent action, and it’s refreshing to see someone like Musk taking a hands-on approach. The media needs to step up and shine a spotlight on this crisis, rather than getting caught up in petty Twitter spats.
