The Biden administration’s relentless attack on American energy independence has stirred up quite the hornet’s nest. The American Petroleum Institute (API) has boldly stepped up to the plate and delivered a powerful blow in the form of a lawsuit against the administration’s debilitating restrictions on offshore oil and natural gas leases.

API’s Senior Vice President and General Counsel, Ryan Meyers, minced no words as he condemned the shortsightedness of the Biden administration’s actions. With demand for affordable and reliable energy soaring, the administration’s move to shackle access to abundant energy resources in federal waters is simply mind-boggling. The restricting of lease sales in federal waters, particularly in a region known for yielding some of the world’s least carbon-intensive barrels, is a grave disservice to American consumers. By limiting access to these crucial resources, the Biden administration is shamelessly jeopardizing our energy security and nudging us closer towards reliance on foreign sources – a dangerous game, indeed.
The Interior Department’s tardy release of a five-year plan for oil and natural gas leases, coupled with its paltry offering of just three potential leases, reeks of incompetence and negligence. The API rightly points out that 2024 will mark the first year without an offshore lease sale since 1966. This is a disturbing regression, and API’s legal challenge rightfully calls out the administration’s decision as “arbitrary, capricious, and not in accordance with law.”
The Biden administration’s feeble attempt to justify its plan by touting an increase in renewable energy production and reduced consumption is laughable at best and downright dangerous at worst. The rush to stifle domestic energy production in favor of unproven alternative sources sets a perilous course for our energy future. As API’s President, Mike Sommers, aptly put it, this move is a coordinated assault on American energy production, ultimately weakening our country’s energy dominance and jeopardizing consumers’ access to affordable, reliable energy. The Biden administration’s plan is nothing short of a betrayal to the American people.
