Hurricane Helene has left a trail of devastation across several states. Still, one thing is abundantly clear: the Biden-Harris administration is busier with photo ops than with real disaster response. Georgia’s Republican Governor Brian Kemp has voiced strong displeasure regarding the federal government’s lackadaisical attitude, which is especially telling when over 170 lives have been lost and hundreds more are unaccounted for. It takes a special type of negligence to designate only 11 out of 90 counties as disaster zones in the face of such calamity. Apparently, the White House prefers to act like the weather is merely a suggestion rather than a serious threat.
The Vice President, meanwhile, continued to swan through California, attending fundraisers while her constituents were grappling with fallen trees and submerged neighborhoods. While claiming to be “deeply involved” in recovery efforts, a statement peppered with empty platitudes doesn’t quite cut it when the camera is blasting Instagram photos instead of details about rescue operations. Emotions run high when one compares heartfelt sentiments issued from afar with the urgent needs of those languishing in the aftermath of a natural disaster.

Former Congressman Mark Walker of North Carolina didn’t hold back in calling out Washington for its misplaced priorities. He highlighted the misuse of taxpayer dollars on a $50 million facility currently lying unused for illegal migrants. While the Biden administration is busy rolling out the welcome mat for non-citizens, stranded Americans are left out in the cold—or, more accurately, in the rain. Maybe those in charge should reallocate a few resources for U.S. citizens who desperately need them instead of saving seats for people who broke the law even to get here.
An eye-rolling incident unfolded when local hero Jordan Seidhom, a South Carolina helicopter pilot, found himself in hot water while trying to conduct rescue missions. Rather than being lauded for his selfless acts, local authorities opted to threaten him with imprisonment, as if saving lives constitutes a crime. The absurdity mounts when one realizes that the local government would rather have people perish in the mountains than risk someone flying around in a helicopter. It’s the unfortunate hallmark of a government that has lost touch with the public it is supposed to serve.
While the commander-in-chief and his vice president finally graced the storm-ravaged areas with their presence, it feels more like a PR stunt than genuine concern. Trump’s offhand remarks about federal responsiveness seem to strike a chord with people who are left wanting and waiting for tangible actions instead of vague promises. One can’t help but feel this administration is like a ship captain trying to steer the wheel in a storm with no crew on deck, leaving those in dire situations to fend for themselves. As usual, the real question is whether the powers that be will finally wake up and do their job for once.
