The Biden-Harris administration seems to have taken an unconventional approach to disaster relief funding, opting to rescue illegal aliens rather than American citizens in dire need. Recent reports reveal that over $1 billion in tax dollars, originally earmarked for disaster relief, has diverted to support noncitizens through various programs. This begs the question: when exactly did the bureaucrats in Washington decide that the severe needs of Americans should take a backseat to providing resources for those who have circumvented the law?
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced that nearly $364 million was allocated in the fiscal year 2023 and a whopping $650 million for the upcoming fiscal year 2024 to the so-called “Shelter and Services Program” which—surprise, surprise—cater to illegal immigrants released by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This program is supposedly a partnership with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, meant to provide services for those who broke the law facilitating their entry into the country. Ironically, this is a federal agency created explicitly to aid citizens recovering from natural disasters. Since when did helping those who don’t have a legal right to be here take precedence over helping American citizens affected by disasters?
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has said there is NO MONEY left to help Hurricane victims; after spending $640 million on migrants.

This diversion of funds comes at a time when American citizens affected by Hurricane Helene are left high and dry. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas recently lamented that FEMA is strained on funds for those suffering from the hurricane devastation—how convenient! Apparently, those in North Carolina and Georgia waiting for essential relief are not the priority this administration has chosen. With Mayorkas’ comments, it becomes starkly clear: funds that could have gone toward helping everyday Americans are instead being funneled away into programs supporting illegal immigration.
The irony here is palpable. While FEMA runs low on funds for responding to Federal Emergencies (you know, the “E” and “F” in FEMA), nearly $1 billion has been splashed around on unsanctioned guests over the last two years. Proponents of this spending might argue that it helps communities as a whole, but how is it benefiting the hardworking Americans who find themselves displaced and struggling from a hurricane? Donald Trump Jr. summed up the sentiment that many Americans across the nation are feeling—that it really is hard to wrap one’s head around this misguided prioritization.
In an even more disheartening twist, citizens are taking matters into their own hands while bureaucrats seem more interested in enforcing regulations than offering assistance to their fellow countrymen. A South Carolina pilot named Jordan Seidhom faced the threat of arrest after rescuing disaster victims stranded in North Carolina, simply because he didn’t abide by the latest flight restrictions. Meanwhile, the same administration ensures that those who have broken our laws receive funding and support in their pursuit of privileges, while Americans brave enough to help out others are threatened with legal repercussions.
This startling contrast reveals a crucial disconnect between the Biden administration’s policies and the needs of its citizens. One can only hope that Americans remember this costly diversion of resources come election time. It is abundantly clear that the priorities are askew, and the nation’s foundations are at risk while Washington continues to give priority to those who have taken advantage of America’s goodwill.
