NBC News has reported an interesting turn of events in Taiwan over the weekend. The Taiwanese people have chosen Lai Ching-te as their new president, but there’s a catch – he’s a strong advocate for independence from the People’s Republic of China. Now, you would think that President Joe Biden, being the protector of liberty and democracy, would support Taiwan’s desire for independence, right? Wrong! Biden wasted no time in withdrawing support for Taiwan’s ambitions, stating, “We do not support independence.” Great move, Biden. Let’s just ignore the aspirations of the Taiwanese people and bow down to the communist regime in China.
Of course, House Speaker Mike Johnson had a different reaction. He congratulated Lai on his victory and even announced plans to send a delegation to Taiwan. Finally, someone with some backbone! Johnson understands the importance of standing up for democracy and security in the Indo-Pacific region. It’s refreshing to see a politician who doesn’t kowtow to international bullies.

But wait, there’s more! China, always ready to throw its weight around, warned the United States to stop arming Taiwan and expressing support for its independence. How dare they! China’s communist regime even threatened to “reunify” the two countries by force if necessary. Well, China, here’s a newsflash for you – the United States won’t back down. We won’t let you bully a small nation seeking freedom and self-determination.
Now, let’s talk about the people of Taiwan. Despite what Biden and China may think, polling data suggests that most Taiwanese residents indeed favor independence from China. They are tired of living under the shadow of a communist regime that claims ownership over their island. Lai captured 40% of the vote, with the remaining anti-independence candidates splitting the rest. This shows just how divided Taiwan is on this issue. But it’s clear that a significant portion of the population wants to break free from China’s grip and establish their own identity.
In conclusion, it’s disappointing to see President Biden turn his back on Taiwan’s quest for independence. The United States should be a champion for liberty and democracy, not a lapdog for China’s communist regime. It’s time for our leaders to show some courage and stand up to the bullies in Beijing. We cannot let the aspirations of the Taiwanese people be trampled upon. Freedom and self-determination should always be supported, no matter the cost.
