During the press conference, Biden deviated from his usual process of selecting reporters from a provided list and personally chose who to take questions from. This led to some combative exchanges, including one with CNN’s MJ Lee. When Lee expressed concerns about his age and mental acuity, Biden interrupted her and dismissed her judgment, stating that it was not the judgment of the press.
Undeterred, Lee continued to press the president, asking why it had to be him as the candidate and if there were others who could defeat former President Donald Trump. Biden confidently responded that he believed he was the most qualified person in the country right now to finish the job he started as president.
Despite Biden’s dismissive response to concerns about his age and ability, a recent poll showed that 76 percent of voters, including 54 percent of Democrats, have either major or moderate concerns about his mental and physical health. Only 11 percent said they had no concerns. This coincided with concerns about Trump’s fitness for office, with 48 percent of respondents expressing similar levels of concern.
In addition to concerns about his age and mental acuity, Biden also faced questions about his involvement in the alleged wrongdoing and corruption of his son, Hunter Biden. The special counsel’s report stated that Biden will not face charges for mishandling classified government documents due to his poor memory and age, implying that he may not have known what he was doing was wrong. However, the report did state that Biden willfully and negligently mishandled government secrets before his inauguration.
