This gesture, while rooted in protocol, contrasts sharply with the plan for Donald Trump’s upcoming inauguration, leaving many scratching their heads about the Democrats’ timing.
The irony is thick enough to cut with a butter knife, as Biden’s action comes just as Trump is prepping for his big debut on January 20. It seems that there’s a bit of a party going on in the White House, with Democrats getting their kicks seeing the American flag at half-mast while they toast to their political victories. In a not-so-subtle jab at the Democrats, Trump pointed out that this will mark the first time in history an incoming president will have the flag lowered instead of proudly flying high. He suggested that if the Democrats were truly patriotic, they wouldn’t find any joy in a display that dampens the spirits of the nation. The thought of being greeted by a limping flag while taking the oath of office is something that should have been avoided at all costs. After all, who thought it wise to rain on Trump’s parade right before he takes the reins again?
To add some historical context, previous presidents like Richard Nixon understood the importance of the flag’s display during significant transitions. Nixon was quick to raise the flag for his inauguration despite recent losses in the presidential race, realizing that patriotism should reign supreme during such important events. Contrary to this ungracious move by the current administration, there’s a long-standing tradition of elevating national symbols, not dragging them down when a new leader steps into the spotlight.
As for Carter’s funeral, which kicked off in his hometown of Plains, Georgia, it seems that everyone is playing by the rules when it comes to honoring the former president. His casket is expected to lie in state, following the traditional customs, until the end of the day, when he will be laid to rest in a dignified manner. The nation is gearing up for a moment of reflection, even if the political landscape surrounding it is such a circus that it’s hard to figure out what is truly being honored.
