Joe Biden seems to have taken a long vacation since stepping out of the presidential race back in July, and it’s looking like it might just be forever if he keeps up this disappearance act. Meanwhile, Donald Trump, the man with the golden headlines, continues to dominate the news cycle as the president-elect, leaving Biden to shuffle around in the shadows like a character from a low-budget horror movie. The spotlight has officially been turned off for Mr. Biden, and he’s nowhere to be seen.
In an effort to earn some attention, the former vice president decided to pop up with a flashy new initiative that looks suspiciously like a little pre-holiday goodwill. On a Thursday morning that would otherwise be just another routine day, Biden announced the commutation of sentences for a whopping 1,500 individuals. These are folks who were already serving time in home confinement during the pandemic—likely living in posh Netflix heaven while the rest of America was confined to their own homes with constant reruns of “The Office.” It seems like prison wasn’t quite prison for these individuals, but hey, what’s a little home confinement when you’ve got some popcorn and a couch?

But that’s not all. Biden also threw in more than three dozen pardons as icing on this attention-seeking cake. How generous of him! This move can’t help but look like a last-ditch effort to boost his image before Trump officially takes the reins, and it raises the question of whether he’s trying to win over voters who can’t seem to recall where he went. Apparently, free passes are the new black in a desperate play for relevance.
While some might argue this is a compassionate gesture, one has to wonder about the timing. With inflation making every grocery run feel like a heist, it feels more like a headline-grabbing stunt than an actual attempt to address serious issues facing the nation. After all, shouldn’t a sitting or any president focus on upholding the law and order rather than letting a bunch of folks skip their sentences? Is this really the kind of leadership America needs?
Beyond the apparent political maneuvering, Biden’s actions underline a controversial liberal mindset that often prefers leniency over accountability. While many conservatives would argue for holding people accountable for their actions, it seems that the Democrats are merrily marching to the beat of a different drum, doing away with consequences faster than you can say “defund the police.” Biden might want to figure out how to make appearances stick instead of setting loose a bunch of ex-offenders and hoping to steal a few headlines in the process. But with Trump back in the driver’s seat, it’s hard to imagine anyone really paying attention to whatever Biden has cooking in the back room at this point.
