Biden Schmoozes with UAW Boss, Auto Giants Fear Strike Impact!

President Joe Biden recently had a phone conversation with Shawn Fain, the president of the United Auto Workers (UAW), as well as leaders from major auto companies, just hours before the UAW was set to make a decision regarding a potential strike. The White House deputy press secretary made this announcement on X (formerly known as Twitter), stating that Biden engaged in discussions with industry leaders from both sides to address the ongoing negotiations.

The UAW represents around 150,000 workers at General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis, which is the company that now controls Chrysler. These three automakers are commonly referred to as the “Big Three.” If a strike were to occur, it would have a substantial impact on the auto industry and the wider U.S. economy.

According to the Anderson Economic Group, a 10-day work stoppage at these plants would cost the U.S. economy a staggering $5.5 billion. Furthermore, the auto manufacturers themselves would suffer losses of approximately $1 billion, while UAW workers would lose out on $900 million. These numbers emphasize the significance of the impending decision by the UAW.

During his Labor Day speech, President Biden expressed his pride in being recognized as the “most pro-union president.” Speaking about jobs and the importance of unions, he stated, “We’re celebrating jobs — good-paying jobs, jobs you can raise a family on, union jobs.” With this comment, Biden highlighted his support for the labor movement and his commitment to the well-being of American workers.

As UAW prepared to hold a press conference at 10 p.m. on Thursday, the nation eagerly awaited their decision, knowing that the outcome would have far-reaching consequences.
