Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made a trip to the nation’s capital to have a serious talk with President Joe Biden about the importance of military and financial aid to Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia. Zelensky voiced his concerns about the dangers of cutting off this support, and Biden responded by assuring him that the United States would continue to provide ATACMS long-range missiles and even exempt Ukraine in the event of a government shutdown.
Despite recently sending a $400 million check to Ukraine, Biden went ahead and announced a new $325 million military aid package for the country. This marks the 43rd time that the U.S. has provided weapons to Ukraine, amounting to a total of $43 billion in military aid since Russia’s invasion in 2022.
According to reports, Kyiv has specifically requested Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) to enhance their ability to attack and disrupt supply lines, air bases, and rail networks in Russian territory. The U.S. Army website describes ATACMS as being designed for “deep attack of enemy second-echelon forces.” It was previously reported that the Biden Administration was considering sending ATACMS that can fly up to 190 miles to Ukraine, but it’s unclear if that plan is still on the table.
In the previous aid package, Ukraine received air defense missiles, armored vehicles, and small drones. While Biden promised to provide ATACMS if necessary, he also claimed that Ukraine already possesses similar capabilities. However, Biden’s commitment to supporting Ukraine, despite opposition from the GOP, raises questions as he continues to prioritize his relationship with the country over pressing domestic issues such as inflation, a potential government shutdown, and the border crisis. It’s no wonder Biden is so invested in Ukraine, considering the shady business deals he has been involved in with them and the millions of dollars he has made from those relationships.
