President Joe Biden has decided to veto a bill proposed by House Republicans that would fund military construction and the Department of Veterans Affairs for fiscal 2025. The White House Office of Management and Budget criticized the GOP proposal, labeling it as “partisan” and claiming it would result in deep cuts to various important programs. The OMB also objected to several sections of the bill, including ones preventing the closure or realignment of U.S. Naval Station Guantanamo Bay and certain healthcare provisions related to gender transition procedures and same-sex marriage support.

The Biden administration also opposes the bill’s reallocation of military construction funding from priority projects to other projects. The House Appropriations Committee passed the bill last month, with Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Subcommittee Chairman John Carter asserting that the bill reflects a deep commitment to servicemembers and veterans, addressing critical security challenges in the Pacific and ensuring veterans’ healthcare is fully funded.

However, the Biden administration remains firm in its decision to veto the bill proposed by House Republicans.
