The White House has confirmed that 17 Americans are currently unaccounted for, and tragically, 22 Americans have been killed in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby stated that the number of Americans held hostage by Hamas is believed to be small, potentially less than a handful. However, he warned that the number could increase over time.
When asked about the condition and location of the hostages, Kirby candidly admitted that the administration did not have concrete information. In a display of determination and action, Representative Cory Mills, an Army veteran, has taken matters into his own hands. Mills, who previously assisted with the evacuation efforts in Afghanistan, revealed that he has been aiding Americans in Israel, “doing Biden’s job.” He has already helped 32 Americans evacuate and plans to continue his efforts. While specific details of his operation remain undisclosed for safety reasons, his actions demonstrate the proactive measures being taken to rescue American citizens.
Amid the crisis, lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have come together to urge the Biden administration to prioritize the evacuation of Americans trapped in Israel. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, 146 members of Congress have called on Secretary of State Antony Blinken to utilize all available resources, including chartering flights and military options if necessary. The legislators have received harrowing reports from their constituents about the challenges they face due to the Hamas attacks.
