When questioned about his message for individuals defying congressional subpoenas regarding the January 6 committee, Biden strongly expressed his hope that the committee pursues them and holds them criminally accountable, suggesting prosecution by the Justice Department. However, Hunter Biden chose to defy a House of Representatives subpoena, opting for a news conference outside the Capitol instead of appearing before the House Oversight and Judiciary committees.
Following Hunter's defiance, Republican congressmen James Comer and Jim Jordan, chairs of the House Oversight and Judiciary committees, declared their intention to initiate contempt of Congress proceedings against him. In a joint statement, they emphasized that Hunter Biden would not receive special treatment based on his last name.

Concerns have been raised that the president's son might evade consequences for his actions. The House Oversight Committee has compiled a "Bidens' Influence-Peddling Timeline" on its website, presenting circumstantial evidence suggesting that Joe Biden abused his power and profited from deals facilitated by Hunter Biden during his vice-presidential tenure.
