Joe Biden has once again proven that he can stumble over his own words faster than a kid in a candy store with no parents to reign him in. After the Democrats put their hopes on a joke made at a Donald Trump rally, Biden managed to toss a proverbial banana peel right in their path. The situation is more entertaining than a sitcom, but this is real life—and it seems Biden’s not qualified to even write the script.
In a Zoom call intended to distance himself from some comedy mishaps, Biden decided to double down on the mockery. He targeted Trump supporters, calling them “garbage” in a swipe that was less like a presidential address and more akin to an angry uncle at a family reunion. With a string of confusing thoughts that could baffle even the most talented translators, he also took a jab at both a rally speaker’s comments about Puerto Rico and Trump’s alleged mistreatment of Latinos. It looked like an elaborate attempt to draw attention away from his own party’s floundering and Kamala Harris’s multiple failures. Spoiler alert: it didn’t work.
The White House, realizing just how badly Biden had scuffed the glass, immediately rolled out the cleanup crew. It’s a wonder he didn’t order a full-scale disaster response; the last thing the Democrats need is Biden creating a dumpster fire in a political landscape already littered with issues. Google Trends certainly didn’t help improve the mood, as searches for Joe’s blunders soon dwarfed any interest in the original, much less offensive joke. Instead of shining a light on the joke, Biden cast shadows where there were none. Oops!

Meanwhile, Biden’s unfortunate comments handed Trump a golden opportunity. The former president took it and ran with it faster than his critics can count to three. At a rally in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Trump showed up donning a garbage man’s vest, rallying supporters with a witty approach to appeal to their sentiments. His ability to pivot and own the narrative demonstrates a masterclass in political maneuvering, contrasting sharply with the Biden administration’s “carry on regardless” mentality.
While the Democrats desperately tried to grasp the reins of their narrative after Biden’s flub, Trump struck the defining chord for the nearly year-long battle for voter sympathy and attention. Let’s not kid ourselves—the Democrats viewed this whole farce as a potential game changer. But in the end, their hopes of exploiting Biden’s rival’s faux pas crumbled faster than a stale piece of bread. As the moral of this story might suggest: in the unpredictable circus that is American politics, one clown’s misstep can easily become another clown’s spotlight moment.
