In what can only be seen as a last-minute act of political defiance, President Biden and his administration have taken a sledgehammer to national security by releasing 11 detainees from Guantanamo Bay. Just when it seemed they couldn’t make more head-scratching decisions, the White House has chosen to open the gates to some of the very individuals connected to the international terror network of al-Qaeda. This move is as baffling as it is reckless.
Among the released are alleged bodyguards of Osama bin Laden, which raises the question: how does a president justify letting loose individuals who’ve purportedly stood guard over the very architect of 9/11? If there’s a plan at play, it resembles a game of Russian roulette with America’s safety rather than any coherent national security strategy. The thought process appears to be an echo of the previous administration’s failures rather than a new dawn for diplomacy or human rights.
Biden’s staff seems to have mistaken the ideas of mercy and justice in this scenario. The intellectual gymnastics involved in portraying this as anything but a pro-terror move are astonishing. Is this what they mean by a fresh approach? If so, Americans might need to demand a refund on the last couple of elections. The optics of this decision are about as appealing as a sweaty pork sandwich at a vegan festival, leaving many wondering who really benefits from such a blatant disregard for public safety.

Critics can hardly contain their outrage. The decision not only undermines years of military efforts but also indicates a disturbing trend in Biden’s foreign policy: one that suggests that appeasement of terrorists is the new norm. One has to wonder how those who lost loved ones in the War on Terror feel knowing that their sacrifices may be trivialized by these releases. One can nearly hear the rhetorical shrugs coming from the high towers of Washington as they celebrate what they likely call a “humanitarian effort.”
As the clock ticks down on Biden’s presidency, this latest move can be seen as a fitting chapter in a tumultuous four years. It is a stark reminder that when it comes to safety, sometimes a little old-fashioned common sense would go a long way. As President Biden prepares to leave office, his legacy appears to be a mix of misplaced priorities and unfortunate decisions that might just echo in the halls of history as one of the most perplexing administrations in recent memory.
