The American dream of homeownership seems to be slipping further from the grasp of young families, and the latest data shows how Biden’s economic policies have contributed to this disturbing trend. In January, as home prices soared to new heights, the number of homes sold took a nosedive, painting a bleak picture for potential buyers. The National Association of Realtors reported a staggering 4.9% drop in sales of previously-owned homes from the previous month. This situation isn’t just inconvenient; it’s downright alarming for those looking to put down roots and build a future.

The grim statistics are laid bare: there were 1.18 million homes available at the end of January, marking a 3.5% increase from December and a whopping 17% rise compared to the same time last year. However, while inventory edged up, the median price of a home skyrocketed to $396,900—a 4.8% increase from the previous year and a record high for January. Combined with stubbornly high mortgage rates, potential homeowners are finding themselves in a tight spot, cornered by soaring prices and limited listings.

While many might want to deflect blame onto previous administrations or external factors, it’s time to acknowledge that the current Democratic leadership has fostered an environment where affordable housing is becoming a rare commodity. Yes, even if some in the mainstream media desperately grasp for the Trump-era scapegoat, this issue has deep roots in the policies initiated long before January 20th. Recent data spans a timeline that reflects decisions made under the current administration, which cannot be overlooked.

Economics 101 reveals that in a market with limited supply and lower demand, prices will inevitably climb. This is clearly visible in the current housing market, where the median price reaching close to $400,000 is more than just a number—it’s a symbol of a policy failure. Buyers are competing for a shrinking pool of homes, and nearly 15% of those sold were above their original listing price, reflecting fierce competition in a mismanaged market. The sweet spot for affordable starter homes seems to have vanished, leaving a gap in the market that the average American family desperately needs filled. 

 

A significant contributor to this housing crisis is the growing lack of new starter homes. Instead of the charming ranch-style homes where many Americans started their journeys, new constructions lean heavily toward multi-family units or upscale developments that are out of reach for entry-level buyers. Consequently, the dream of homeownership is replaced by an ever-growing nightmare of unaffordable living, restrictive zoning laws, and a bureaucratic quagmire that only makes matters worse.

The need for immediate action is clear. Solutions should involve lifting the heavy hand of regulation that throttles home construction and drives prices ever higher. Lowering interest rates would be a welcomed relief, but boosting supply remains the primary concern.
