Bill Maher, the talk show host known for his liberal musings, has thrown his hands up in the air, declaring that he may hightail it out of his HBO gig, “Real Time with Bill Maher,” before facing the seemingly endless onslaught of news surrounding President-elect Donald Trump. In a recent episode of his “Club Random” podcast, he admitted to feeling overwhelmed at the thought of Trump taking office, which has got to be a real treat for any conservative flipping through the channels.
Maher’s melodramatic outburst was directed toward actress Jane Fonda, and he didn’t hold back in expressing his dread about the impending Trump era. It seems that Maher’s past efforts on the Trump front have left him with mental whiplash, and now he’s resorting to the idea of abandoning ship rather than continuing to ride the wave of Trump-related news that he has been so keen to cover in the past. His comments could indicate a realization that no matter how hard he tries, the Trump news cycle is as inevitable as a hurricane in the tropics.
He certainly isn’t off base when he predicts that Trump will hog the media spotlight like a toddler with a shiny new toy once he’s inaugurated. Despite Maher’s attempts to change the narrative, even he concedes that Trump will dominate the headlines. Fonda, perhaps trying to save her buddy from a potential career crisis, suggested that he find something else to focus on. Maybe knitting? But Maher shot that idea down faster than a liberal could say “cancel culture,” insisting that politics is what drives his show.

In lieu of continuing with his HBO antics, Maher might want to consider going fully podcast as many comedians have done recently. He did launch a podcast network earlier this year, peddling the idea that he could step back from the limelight of television. Unfortunately for him, his HBO show isn’t going anywhere soon, thanks to a two-season renewal that keeps him locked in until 2026.
As Maher contemplates his next move, the conservative crowd can only chuckle at the thought of a liberal star realizing that the Trump train isn’t going to slow down. With his limited options, Maher is in quite the pickle, one that has him yearning for the days of less political turmoil. If only he realized that for many conservatives, a day without Trump news feels like a day without sunshine—something he might not have considered in his most recent fit of political fatigue.
