In a bold and brazen move, City Councilmember Shaun Abreu has unleashed two new bills that are sure to ruffle the feathers of hardworking delivery drivers and freedom-loving consumers alike. These bills aim to force delivery apps to push for tips before the order is even delivered, and would set a default minimum suggested tip of 10% that patrons would have to actively decline. Mr. Abreu’s scheme is a gross overstep into the free market and personal choice, and it has conservative citizens up in arms.

The first bill, if passed, would mandate that delivery apps pester users for tips before the meal arrives at their door. This shameless cash grab infringes on the sanctity of the transaction, and pushes an uncomfortable and intrusive obligation onto the public. And if that isn’t enough, the second bill would force a 10% tip as the default suggestion, putting the burden on the customer to actively reject this arbitrary and excessive gratuity.
Conservatives are outraged at the audacity of these bills, which reek of government overreach and nanny-state interference. Mr. Abreu seems to believe that he knows better than hardworking Americans about how to spend their own money. The nerve! This kind of blatant disregard for personal choice and individual responsibility sets a dangerous precedent for government intrusion into our everyday lives.
If these bills were to pass, they would undoubtedly hurt working-class families and small businesses, as some consumers may opt to forgo delivery altogether rather than be strong-armed into tipping. Additionally, the arbitrary 10% minimum tip could deter people from using delivery services altogether. We must stand up against overbearing government regulation and protect our right to make our own choices, including how much to tip for a service.
