Three years ago, Joe Biden campaigned for president as an ally of Black Lives Matter. However, recent events have shown that BLM is now taking the side of Hamas in the wake of the brutal attacks in Israel. In a statement published by Black Lives Matter Grassroots, Hamas’ actions of raping and pillaging were described as acts of “self-defense” against “apartheid.” It is truly alarming that BLM would support a terrorist organization like Hamas.
The statement went on to connect Palestine’s struggle for “liberation” to a worldwide fight against “colonialism” and oppression. This attempt to link the struggles of Palestinians with black people in America facing “mass incarceration” is nothing short of a desperate and misguided comparison. It is offensive and disrespectful to the true victims of apartheid and oppression around the world.
It is important to note that Israel has been under siege from Hamas in the blockaded Gaza Strip. Hamas has murdered over 1,000 Israelis and kidnapped over 100 people in their ongoing assault near the Gaza-Israel border. To support and defend such barbaric actions is not only morally wrong but also dangerous.
This support for Hamas has caused a rift on the left, with centrist Democrats and radicals within academia and groups like Black Lives Matter taking opposing sides. While most elected Democrats have sided with Israel, Biden himself has condemned Hamas as “sheer evil.” It is unfortunate that the left is becoming increasingly divided on this issue, but it is clear where Biden stands.
Furthermore, the Chicago chapter of BLM even shared a post glorifying the Hamas fighters who used paragliders to slaughter and kidnap festival goers in the desert. This is a disturbing display of support for violence and terrorism. It is crucial that Biden, as the leader of the Democratic party, condemns such actions and distances himself from this violent and radical group.
It is not surprising, however, for those who remember BLM’s violent and radical actions during the summer of rage three years ago. This recent support for Hamas only solidifies their reputation as a violent group. It is time for Biden to take a stand against this dangerous alliance and condemn Black Lives Matter for their support of Hamas. The safety and security of Israel, as well as the values of peace and justice, must always come first.
