Renowned playwright David Mamet, who is himself Jewish, expressed his disappointment with modern-day Democratic politicians and their treatment of Jewish people. In an editorial titled “How the Democrats betrayed the Jews,” Mamet criticized the Democratic Party’s stance on Israel and its approach to foreign policy.

Mamet acknowledged that historically, Jewish Americans have voted for Democrats out of tradition, including himself. However, he stated that he can no longer align himself with the party. Mamet specifically called out Democratic presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden for refusing to meet with the Israeli Prime Minister during times of peace and for providing aid to Iran, a state that has been hostile to Israel.
The playwright also drew attention to the growing anti-Semitism within the Democratic Party. He highlighted the affiliations of some representatives with Democratic Socialists and pro-Palestinian groups who openly call for the end of Israel. Mamet raised concerns that such rhetoric effectively advocates for the death of Jews.
Mamet further criticized Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) for accusing the Israel Defense Forces of causing an explosion at a hospital, an allegation Mamet referred to as “libel.” While Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) later retracted her initial response to the incident, Tlaib did not rescind her statement.
Mamet concluded his editorial by warning that history may repeat itself if Jewish Americans continue to condemn their fellow Jews in Israel. He drew a parallel between these individuals and German Jews who ignored the plight of their Eastern counterparts before World War II.
As an influential figure in the arts community, Mamet’s condemnation of the Democratic Party carries weight.
