Burgum Slams Harris Campaign Tactics Ahead of Trump Debate

Governor Doug Burgum of North Dakota has taken aim at Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign, predicting it will continue to “flip flop” throughout the election cycle. The latest debate controversy centers around the upcoming presidential debate on ABC News, where it seems Harris wants to change the microphone policy. Reportedly, the Harris camp is angling for both candidates to have their microphones on at all times, perhaps hoping to ensure that former President Donald Trump won’t misspeak or lose his composure during the face-off. This is quite the turnaround from when the Biden campaign pushed for a muting policy during a previous debate on CNN.

Burgum has expressed skepticism about the Harris campaign’s intentions, suggesting that their strategies might be more about avoiding a clash than engaging in one. He pointed out the double standard, noting their absurd back-and-forth and reliance on unnamed aides for support on crucial decisions. The governor implied that Harris’s camp is likely up to no good, concocting numerous unreasonable rules that would heavily favor them—an old trick in the political playbook that has been employed by many desperate candidates.

In a colorful jab, Burgum suggested that Harris would much prefer to remain “in the vault inside the basement,” avoiding direct confrontation with Trump altogether. He further inferred that her reluctance to engage might be a way of hiding her policies, which most voters would assume mirror those of President Joe Biden unless stated otherwise. The joke might be on Harris, who has yet to conduct a straightforward one-on-one interview since launching her campaign, raising questions about her capability to defend her stances.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump has publicly questioned why he should even bother engaging in a debate with Harris. After all, she has reportedly turned down offers from various networks to go head-to-head with him. This ongoing saga has triggered speculation about her confidence—or lack thereof—in facing Trump, who remains popular with a solid base of support. Trump’s senior adviser, Jason Miller, chimed in, claiming that Harris’s campaign is scrambling for a way out of the debate, exposing what might just be fear of encountering a seasoned opponent.

With the Trump-Harris debate scheduled for September 10 and the vice presidential debate between Senator J.D. Vance and Governor Tim Walz just weeks later, Burgum is encouraging voters to demand answers from Harris. The governor emphasizes the unprecedented nature of a candidate evading the press so close to an election, implying that it is an act of political cowardice. Should this pattern continue, he asserts, Harris risks being boxed in by her own party’s failures and the very real possibility that her electoral fate may resemble a basement-dwelling existence—pushing her further into obscurity rather than into the spotlight.
