In a recent troubling turn of events up north, the Canadian parliament is once again considering Bill C-63, also known as the “Online Harms Act.” This Bill, championed by Justice Minister Arif Virani and backed by various activists and media figures, poses a grave threat to the freedom and independence of the Canadian people. What’s more concerning is the closed meeting that took place at Rideau Hall, the Governor General’s residence, where only supporters of the Bill were invited, excluding any opposition voices.

The involvement of Governor General Mary Simon, who is supposed to be non-partisan, in promoting this Bill has raised serious questions about her impartiality. The Governor General’s role should not be exploited for political agendas, especially for pushing contentious legislation like Bill C-63. It is evident that the Liberal government is determined to push this legislation through without proper public scrutiny or accountability, which is a dangerous trend for democracy.
If Bill C-63 becomes law, it would strip away fundamental democratic principles like freedom of expression, assembly, and religion, transforming Canada into a state where citizens are at the mercy of the government’s dictates. This Bill, under the guise of combatting online harms, actually sets the stage for censorship on a level reminiscent of authoritarian regimes like China and North Korea. The vague definitions of “hate speech” and the severe penalties outlined in the Bill could stifle legitimate dissent and curtail individual liberties.
The creation of a new bureaucracy to monitor online content, expanded powers for the Canadian Human Rights Commission to censor opinions, and the potential for retrospective punishment for past expressions are all alarming aspects of Bill C-63. This legislation could lead to a dystopian reality where even thoughts and opinions could be criminalized, reminiscent of a Kafkaesque nightmare. The cozy relationship between the Prime Minister, Justice Minister, and the Governor General in pushing this Bill underscores the authoritarian intentions of the ruling elite in Canada.
The passage of Bill C-63 would not only erode the democratic fabric of Canada but also set a dangerous precedent for other Western nations. The overreach of government power and the assault on free speech embodied in this legislation should serve as a wake-up call for all freedom-loving individuals. It’s imperative to resist such oppressive measures and safeguard the principles that form the bedrock of a free society.
