CBS continues to trot out its finest example of faux journalism with its latest offering on Ron DeSantis, where the supermarket Publix and COVID vaccines somehow made it into the same bowl of nonsense. Rather than holding anyone accountable for their blunders—which just seem to pile up like unsold fireworks after the Fourth of July—the network shrugged its shoulders and moved on. This type of “reporting” has become par for the course, reminiscent of that embarrassing 60 Minutes segment that recently aired regarding the so-called tragic fate of federal workers since President Donald Trump allegedly disrupted their cushy existence with spending cuts.
Instead of showcasing the endless career paths available to them outside the overstuffed government piggy bank, the segment focused on a pair of woeful souls who lamented their recent job losses. It’s easy to muster some fake empathy for them, yet these workers weren’t spending their days in the trenches at USAID. No, these were communications consultants, touting their sob stories as if they were lifers in the agency. It’s unclear how losing a gig as a glorified speechwriter—and not a position that directly serves the public—qualifies them for front-page sympathy.

The way 60 Minutes presented Kristina Drye—the supposed poster child of the devastated federal worker—is almost laughably misleading. It claimed she was “fired in the chaotic shutdown of USAID,” failing to clarify that she was never officially employed by the agency. Instead, she worked for an outside firm, happily penning speeches. The irony is rich; the show tried to portray her as another casualty of Trump’s fiscal conservatism while hiding the fact that she had an insider’s connection through the Biden administration, serving Samantha Power, no less.
As if that wasn’t enough, Drye’s progressive inclinations reveal even more about the nature of her “work.” Perhaps it’s no wonder she was quick to frame herself as a victim; after all, the torch she carries for activism isn’t just about her writing. Using her desk as a political banner, she sported the Intersex-Inclusive Pride flag as a testament to her ideological leanings. How charming—what a way to win the sympathy of the American taxpayer as her cushy setup crumbled around her.
It’s comical how a supposedly groundbreaking program like 60 Minutes continually fails to analyze the real issues affecting everyday Americans. Instead, they parade around pseudo-victims who, frankly, are more worried about their performative wokeness than actual employment problems. While Americans all over the country are navigating job losses and economic hardship, the media focuses on disgruntled bureaucrats steamrolling over real working-class issues. The report missed the mark, and yet, one can only guess how many more like it will plague airwaves, all with the same tired narrative that seems to disregard the reality for the average citizen.
As Elon Musk wryly noted, the show has apparently become little more than a masquerade of meaningful journalism. What else could explain the relentless fawning over government insiders while real Americans continue fighting their own employment battles? The narrative has grown tired and stale, much like the clichés they continue to serve up—simply dressed up in a different coat. If CBS is hoping for sympathy from the American public with these soggy stories, they might find that a bit of reality checking is in order.
