The ongoing obsession of the left with First Lady Melania Trump demonstrates a combination of desperation and low comedy that beggars belief. Last week, comedian Chelsea Handler took her disdain to new heights at the Critics Choice Awards when she compared Melania to a prostitute, all while attempting to push a movie about the First Lady’s life called “Anora.”
Handler’s joke centered around the premise of the film, which tells the story of a young sex worker from Brooklyn who impulsively marries the son of an oligarch. While simultaneously trying to make a commentary on the current state of the nation, Handler can hardly disguise her disdain for both the First Lady and anyone who dares to support her. This is nothing new for Handler, whose comedic style leans heavily on snarky barbs that lack the substance of genuine critique.

This sort of condescending attitude from a white liberal woman is just a microcosm of the left’s tendency to dismiss the voices and choices of those who don’t fit their narrative.
In stark contrast to Handler’s caricature of Melania Trump, a recent CNN poll revealed that the First Lady actually enjoys notable approval ratings. A healthy 33% of American adults regard her positively, with 69% of Republicans expressing favorable sentiments towards her. The numbers tell a different story than Handler’s misguided jab at the First Lady, showing a clear disconnect between elite Hollywood opinions and the sentiments of average voters.
The left’s focus on Melania, from mocking her accent to hurling insults, is less about her as an individual and more about a broader contempt for the Trump family and their supporters. Perhaps this is where Handler’s comedy lacks; it reflects not a genuine critique but rather a refusal to engage with the realities of many Americans who appreciate Melania not just for her role as First Lady, but as a steadfast individual in a complex political environment.
Handler’s antics serve as a reminder that while the left seeks to condemn Melania Trump with mocking comparisons and jibes, the First Lady’s true measure will be found in the popularity she continues to garner among the American public.
