In today’s progressive era, it seems like stating the obvious has become an act of rebellion. Let’s revisit the foundational truth that men are attracted to women, and women are attracted to men. This basic fact of human existence has been the cornerstone of society since time immemorial, yet it’s under constant scrutiny by those who seem intent on denying reality.
Recently, an article popped up on a mainstream media site, supposedly lamenting the resurgence of the ‘male gaze,’ a concept developed by feminist theorist Laura Mulvey. Evidently, the idea isn’t merely about men appreciating the beauty of women, but rather it critiques how women are objectified in media through a patriarchal perspective. The writer of the article fondly recalls the supposed progress society made in portraying women in diverse roles, influenced, of course, by the illustrious depictions in television and movies. One might chuckle at the thought that real-life possibilities need validation from fictional tales.
Yet, to the dismay of such progressives, the world didn’t do away with the reality that men and women are drawn to each other. Society’s alleged pact with progressive doctrines, as some would have us believe, never really took root. The truth about human attraction has always been present, no matter how vehemently some try to wish it away. This is particularly amusing when considering the writer’s notion that media needed to teach individuals about the potential roles women can fill in society. As though civilizations thrived only after Hollywood’s wake-up call.
The writer’s angst doesn’t stop there. They point fingers at the political shifts and social changes as catalysts that brought back ‘narrow’ views on womanhood. Heaven forbid that societal norms recognize the complementary roles of men and women. They mention recent cultural phenomena like social media influencers returning to ideas that showcase traditional attraction dynamics. Of course, these influencers are merely responding to what resonates with audiences, something decidedly beyond the control of progressive rhetoric.
Feminist narratives continue painting women both as powerful and completely helpless. The irony is astounding. When women make controversial decisions, especially in the realm of personal agency, accountability is thrown to the wayside, and blame is placed squarely on men and their ‘gaze.’ Yet, the economy driven by certain types of online content surely operates by demand. But any suggestion that women, too, exercise choice and power within this context seems to be lost on them.
In conclusion, the fabric of human nature remains robust despite the ideological fervor of those like Laura Mulvey. While progressives might believe that everyone agreed to upend traditional heterosexuality, reality paints a different picture. Regardless of the clamor and demands from certain quarters, the enduring connection between men and women persists—rightfully so. While some continue their lamentations against normality, the rest of us can simply smile, knowing that truth, as always, stands the test of time.
