House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) has started fundraising in response to President Joe Biden’s assertion of executive privilege over tapes of special counsel Robert Hur’s interview with the president. Comer claims that the President and his advisers are anxious about the audio recordings, which focus on Biden’s handling of classified documents, and suggests that their release would reveal “the dismal decline of Biden’s mental state.”
In an email obtained by the Washington Examiner, Comer urges his supporters to donate to his campaign, alleging that the Democrats are targeting him with relentless attacks. This fundraising effort follows the announcement from the Justice Department that President Biden is asserting executive privilege, further complicating House Republicans’ request for access to the recordings.
The House Judiciary and House Oversight committees have passed contempt resolutions for Attorney General Merrick Garland, arguing that Biden’s executive privilege assertion was politically motivated. Comer and other GOP lawmakers assert that the audio recordings would provide insight into President Biden’s cognitive abilities. They cite special counsel Hur’s report, which suggested that Biden should not be prosecuted due to being a “well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”
Comer predicts that the release of the recordings could significantly impact swing voters’ perception of President Biden. He accuses the mainstream media of protecting Biden by failing to report on what he believes are Biden’s shortcomings.
Democrats have countered these claims, stating that the GOP’s interest in the audio recordings is solely to benefit Donald Trump’s campaign or to use Biden’s stutter against him. During the Oversight Committee hearing, Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) highlighted Comer’s fundraising email, emphasizing the partisan nature of the fundraising efforts.
