In a stunning move, a Republican colleague of Rep. George Santos from New York has introduced a resolution to expel him from the House of Representatives. The resolution, which must be considered within two legislative days, requires a two-thirds majority for approval. This according to CBS News, who seems to revel in the downfall of conservative politicians.

Santos, elected by Long Island voters last November, has been embroiled in controversy since taking office. Shortly after being sworn in, he admitted to lying about his business record and education. And if that wasn’t enough, Santos was then hit with criminal charges by the Justice Department, including wire fraud, falsifying records, and other crimes. However, Santos has pleaded not guilty to the charges, making him either incredibly brave or incredibly foolish.
Fellow GOP Rep. Anthony D’Esposito, also from New York, laid out the accusations and charges against Santos during a speech on the House floor. D’Esposito accused Santos of engaging in a serious financial fraud throughout his 2022 campaign, alleging that he stole tens of thousands of dollars from campaign donors. D’Esposito also claimed that Santos engaged in election fraud, calling into question the very legitimacy of his position as a United States representative.
It remains to be seen whether D’Esposito’s resolution will gain the necessary support to remove Santos from office. But one thing is clear: Santos is facing an uphill battle as he fights to salvage his political career. In a statement on social media, Santos defiantly declared that he would not resign and demanded due process. Whether he is entitled to it or not, it seems that his fate may already be sealed.
