The recent spectacle of the Democrat National Convention can only be described as a theatrical farewell to President Joe Biden, complete with all the pomp and circumstance of a royal send-off, albeit for a leader whose reign leaves much desired. The event showcased an odd mix of heartfelt tributes and a seemingly endless series of backhanded thanks, as loyal Democrats cheered their long-time leader from the sidelines while simultaneously preparing to usher him out the door for the next candidate, Kamala Harris.
From the onset, the evening felt more like a bizarre tribute night than a legitimate political gathering. Supporters cheered with fervor, clutching signs that proclaimed their gratitude—reminiscent of a reluctant divorce party rather than a celebration of accomplishments. The speeches poured in from Biden’s family and supporters, all seemingly designed to convince both the audience and themselves that this administration was a resounding success. However, for those viewing outside the Democrat echo chamber, the reality was far less rosy.

Dialogue surrounding Biden’s farewell speech showcased the strange dynamics at play. This spectacle culminated in a speech that ran longer than necessary and was peppered with familiar fabrications. Strikingly, it seemed to serve as a desperate attempt to rally the base while making a nod to unity—all the while targeting dissenters with his typical vitriol. It was little more than the same old song and dance from a president on borrowed time. It felt as if the Democrats were collectively chronicling their past as they prepared to shift their focus to what’s next, even as they lauded a leader they were ready to replace.
As Biden concluded, amidst chants and applause, many could not help but reflect on what he had truly brought to the nation during his term. His attempts at cohesion have resulted in ever-deepening divides among Americans on issues of race, gender, and beyond, proving that he is not the unifying figure he claimed to be. For all the facades of gratefulness on display, there was a prevailing sense of relief in the air—an exhale signifying a desire for different leadership.
