Democrat Rep Gallego Criticizes Biden’s Border Policy, Seeks Distance

Rep. Ruben Gallego, the Democratic challenger in the Arizona Senate race, has seemingly found a rare moment of clarity regarding the Biden and Harris administration’s handling of border security. In a not-so-stunning admission during an Axios discussion at the Democratic National Convention, Gallego acknowledged the obvious—Biden and Harris have utterly failed to secure the border over the past four years. In a world where common sense is often drowned out by partisan rhetoric, this acknowledgment stands out like a neon sign amid a blackout.

Attempting to distance himself from the Biden-Harris debacle, Gallego suggested that past administrations, including Trump’s and Obama’s, shared similar blame. This is a classic attempt at revisionist history, but it fails to account for the stark increase in border encounters under Biden. Former President Trump rightfully points to the record numbers of migrants overwhelming border officials, a disaster that has led to 3 million migrants being released into U.S. communities on Biden’s watch. It’s almost as if the Democrats were in a competition to see who could be more lax on border security, and they are winning handily.

While some Democrats were quick to oppose a bipartisan comprehensive border bill—a plan Gallego touted—it’s worth considering why any sensible border security proposal would be met with resistance from the party that has painted itself as the champion of “open borders.” Compromise seems to be the Democrats’ favorite word, yet their practices suggest a reluctance to compromise on actual enforcement or control at the southern frontier.

Turning the conversation to housing affordability, Gallego then endorsed Vice President Harris’ proposal for $25,000 in down payment assistance for first-time homebuyers, claiming it would benefit Latinos. While the intention may sound noble, it begs the question: why does assistance only come after years of mismanagement that has exacerbated housing crises and affordability issues? Instead of promoting long-term solutions, it appears that Democrats prefer to toss cash at problems that stem from their own policies.

In a separate effort to appease the crowd, Gallego also supported expanding the child tax credit to $6,000 for children under one, echoing yet another of Harris’ proposals. While the intent is to help families, this approach of continually throwing money at issues without addressing root causes is reminiscent of a band-aid on a bullet wound. Instead of addressing the systemic problems their policies create, Democrats would rather engage in fiscal handouts while ignoring the reality of their situation.

Overall, Gallego’s recent comments reveal an undercurrent of desperation among Democrats as they face the consequences of policies that seem to prioritize everything but the American citizen. As the Senate race heats up, it will be interesting to see if Gallego can maintain this newfound honesty about his own party’s failures or if he will retreat back into the cozy embrace of party lines as election day approaches.
