Just ten days ago, McCarthy was removed from his speakership by a coalition of eight Republicans and every Democrat. While McCarthy served as Speaker for only nine months, he claimed that the Democrats voted against him because they didn’t want to pay military personnel during a potential government shutdown. In his words, “All the Democrats voted to try to bring chaos.”
In response to the leadership void, House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) emerged as a nominee for House Speaker after Representative Steve Scalise (R-LA) withdrew from the race due to insufficient Republican support. McCarthy threw his support behind Jordan, expressing confidence that the Ohio congressman would secure enough votes in a floor vote. McCarthy assured reporters that the election would take place “shortly” and that everything was progressing smoothly.
