The spectacle of Congress being sworn in on January 6 brought out the usual dramatics from the left, with one particular storyline catching the eye, albeit for all the wrong reasons. Democrats quickly shifted focus to Bruce Fischer, husband of Nebraska Republican Senator Deb Fischer, alleging he snubbed Vice President Kamala Harris by refusing to shake her hand. One has to wonder if there are no bigger fish for the Democrats to fry than this trivial moment.
As the video footage made its rounds, podcaster Brian Tyler Cohen seized the opportunity to fan the flames of outrage. His podcast, ironically named “No Lie,” showcased the incident while declaring the Fischer family emblematic of MAGA’s supposed lack of class. The accusation spiraled into an online frenzy, with every basement-dwelling leftist on Twitter piling on, calling Bruce weak and cowardly for simply prioritizing his dignity—or perhaps just his Bible.

What’s often overlooked in these misguided attacks is the context. Bruce Fischer was quite literally juggling his responsibilities; with one hand occupied holding a cane and the other grasping his wife’s Bible as she swore in for another term. Instead of taking a moment to assess the situation, the outraged leftists threw judgment from their digital thrones, oblivious to basic human decency. Instead of acknowledging that maybe the man was a tad preoccupied, they set their sights on their favorite sport: scoring cheap points against Republicans.
Even more amusing is how this frenzy inadvertently drew comparisons to the vice president’s own gaffes. Biden’s history of foot-in-mouth moments, including telling a wheelchair-bound individual to stand up, is well-documented. Yet when it comes to Democrats, these missteps seem to vanish into thin air—like so much of their ethics and integrity during heated exchanges. Just remembering those incidents shines a brighter light on this double standard.
By the end of the day, Bruce Fischer simply opted to navigate the awkwardness of a viral moment strewn with misinterpretation and instead fulfill his husbandly duties to support Senator Deb Fischer. One might think that, in the realm of leadership, would-be influencers would display a modicum of respect and grace. But alas, in the world of social media, facts matter less than a good outrage story, and it appears that the left was all too eager to turn a family moment into a political soapbox.
In a climate where offense is the currency of the political arena, this snub serves as yet another reminder of how quickly the left resorts to personal attacks rather than substantive critique. Ironically, it casts those throwing shade in a far worse light, revealing the extent to which they are willing to go to undermine their opposition—handshakes and all.
