In today’s world, where fear often seems to be a constant companion, a light shines through the shadows cast by criticism of the National Guard’s role in local communities. There is a chorus of voices, mostly from Democratic officials, who are raising alarms about the deployment of the National Guard and other federal agents, insisting they are “terrorizing” American cities rather than providing safety and security. However, evidence suggests otherwise.
In cities like Chicago and Washington D.C., the deployment of the National Guard has actually brought about a notable decrease in crime. The statistics are hard to ignore: total crime in Washington D.C. has dropped by a staggering 30% since the National Guard was sent to assist local law enforcement. It seems those armed men and women in uniform aren’t the villains they’ve been painted to be, but rather defenders of peace and safety.
The critics, however, continue to fan the flames of fear, claiming that militarizing our cities only leads to more violence. They argue that the presence of armed troops will cause an escalation of tensions, leading to tragic confrontations with civilians. But one has to wonder: where is the accountability for not addressing the real issue at hand? The so-called threat isn’t the National Guard, but those individuals who have entered the country illegally without proper vetting. Shouldn’t that be where the focus lies?
The narrative being pushed by these critics takes aim at the very people who pledge to protect American freedoms. It’s almost as if their fearmongering is a desperate attempt to shift the spotlight away from the real challenges facing our cities. True patriots know that those who serve in the National Guard and other law enforcement agencies are there to uphold the law, not to create strife.
It’s time to recognize the real story here: somewhere in the midst of politicking and posturing lies a group of brave men and women who are dedicating their lives to protect others. By standing firm and supporting the National Guard’s mission, communities have a better shot at safety and security. If we allow fear and false narratives to dictate the conversation, we’ll only continue to see the deterioration of our cities. It’s worth taking a moment to appreciate their hard work—after all, they are the ones truly working to keep our streets safe.
