During a press conference held on Tuesday morning, House Democrats conveyed their unwavering support for Israel while criticizing Republicans for what they perceived as a lack of leadership and the ensuing chaos. Vice Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Ted Lieu, who had faced prior criticism for posting an anti-Semitic trope on social media, issued a robust condemnation of the actions taken against Israel and the terrorist organization Hamas. He stressed that Hamas seeks the slaughter of Jews and the annihilation of Israel. In alignment with President Joe Biden's statements, Lieu emphasized standing by Israel and ensuring it receives the necessary support for self-defense.
Ranking member Greg Meeks likened the actions of Hamas to those of ISIS and expressed empathy for innocent Palestinians who wish to disassociate from Hamas. Meeks also underscored the significance of the Abraham Accords in bolstering Israel's position. He cautioned against escalating the conflict with Iran and advised prudence when discussing Iran's role. However, Meeks left the core values of the Democratic Party somewhat ambiguous.
Kathy Manning, vice-ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, expressed gratitude to President Biden for his backing of Israel and stressed that Hamas should be unequivocally recognized as terrorists, refraining from euphemisms like "militants" or "freedom fighters."
