The Department of Justice recently made headlines by deciding to drop its legal challenge against Tennessee’s SB 1, a law that boldly bans transgender medical procedures for minors. The DOJ, under new leadership, has rallied around the notion that Tennessee’s law does not infringe upon the Fourteenth Amendment’s promise of equal protection. Apparently, after much soul-searching (and perhaps some much-needed reconsideration), the DOJ has concluded that preventing minors from undergoing irreversible medical procedures is a common-sense approach rather than a violation of rights. This revelation could leave progressive activists scratching their heads while shaking their fists at the heavens.

So what does SB 1 actually prohibit? It puts a firm stop to practices such as administering puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and various transgender surgeries on the impressionable youth of Tennessee. The law was initially blocked by a federal judge, much to the delight of the ACLU and the previous Biden administration, who both seemed determined to push gender ideology at every turn. However, a clear-eyed Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals reversed that ruling, giving Tennessee’s lawmakers their rightful place in making decisions about the welfare of their constituents.
This newfound alignment from the DOJ wasn’t born out of thin air, as the agency still won’t dismiss the ACLU’s ongoing lawsuit against SB 1. Instead, it emphasizes the urgency of resolving the issue, indicating that this is a critical matter not just for Tennessee but for similar cases unfolding in courts across America. Clearly, there is no shortage of heavy lifting left for those committed to preserving the integrity of children’s health decisions.
Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti wasted no time in celebrating this turn of events. He commended President Trump, or perhaps more accurately, the shift in administration that seems to embrace a more traditional approach to governance. Skrmetti expressed hope for the Supreme Court’s upcoming decision, which is expected to provide much-needed clarity on these pressing issues. As it stands, the people of Tennessee can be reassured that their elected officials still hold sway over these contentious matters, rather than leaving them to the whims of ideologically-driven courts.
