Ellen DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi, are taking a long vacation from America, reportedly bolting to England like it’s the end of the world as they know it. Friends of the couple have spilled the beans that the election of Donald Trump is the main reason they decided to pack their bags and leave sunny California behind. It seems the prospect of a Trump presidency was just too much for the folksy comedian who once ruled daytime TV.
The couple has taken a liking to the quaint Cotswolds in southern England, trading their Montecito mansion for something a bit more British. For reference, the Montecito pad is just a leisurely 90-minute jaunt from Los Angeles, but now they’re committing to a new lifestyle far away from the Hollywood hustle. Perhaps they think a little rain will wash away the sadness of losing their beloved liberal icon to the presidency.
In a curious turn of events, while wrapping up her nationwide stand-up tour, DeGeneres decided to sell her Montecito home. The timing is suspect, as this move came right after her “Last Stand… Up” comedy tour concluded in Minneapolis. Previous stops included San Diego, Seattle, and Boston, where laughter was undoubtedly mixed with liberal tears as DeGeneres navigated what many consider to be her “farewell tour” from America.
She’s not flying solo on this exodus; it seems the Hollywood exodus continues with other stars seeking refuge overseas. Eva Longoria, known for her role in Desperate Housewives, claimed America has become some sort of dystopian nightmare and has made her own exit to parts unknown. Yet, when cornered, she backtracked, insisting that Trump wasn’t the reason behind her departure, blaming it all on media hyperbole. It’s hard to tell who’s more confused: celebrities leaving in droves or those who can’t decide if they actually want to leave.

On a more grounded note, not all celebrities are opting for a one-way flight out of the country. Radio host Charlamagne tha God made it very clear that he has no intention of crossing the ocean. He’s questioning where he would even go, highlighting a desire to stick it out and unify the country. It’s almost refreshing to see a celebrity considering the implications of their actions rather than scrambling toward overseas safety! In contrast to Harris’ choice to retreat to Hawaii after her election loss, maybe a little self-examination is due for those making hasty exits.
While the stars cry about the state of America and head for the hills—or in this case, the English countryside—it raises the question of what they’re really accomplishing. Perhaps they should consider investing in the country they claim to love, rather than seeking solace in another land. But hey, who needs America when there’s tea and crumpets waiting in the Cotswolds?
