In a closed-door election, House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) and Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) have emerged as the top two candidates for the GOP speaker position. This is big news for Republicans as they determine who will become the next speaker-designate. Although the timeline for a full House vote on the speaker remains unclear, this is a critical step in the process.

There were initially eight candidates in the running, but that number quickly dwindled as Rep. Gary Palmer (R-AL) dropped out just before voting began. Throughout the rounds, Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX), Rep. Jack Bergman (R-MI), Rep. Austin Scott (R-GA), Rep. Kevin Hern (R-OK), and Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) were also eliminated.
Despite not securing a majority vote in the previous rounds, Emmer has consistently come out as the winner. This showcases his appeal and support within the party, but it also means that a subsequent round is necessary.
It will be interesting to see who ultimately becomes the GOP speaker nominee, as they will need to garner conference support before the final floor vote. This decision holds significant weight for conservatives and will impact the direction of the party moving forward.
