An attempted assassination of Donald Trump at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, unfolded recently, but fortunately, the former president emerged unscathed, leaving many to ponder the bizarre antics of his would-be assailant. Identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, the suspect was caught by law enforcement while he lurked in the bushes, aiming an AK-47 style rifle, seemingly without a clue that he was about to become the star of a very unfortunate episode.
Routh’s voting record adds an interesting twist to this sordid tale. Registered in North Carolina since 2012, he showed his true colors by voting in the Democratic primary earlier this year. His past donations through the Democratic fundraising platform ActBlue are a tad more enlightening. It’s always a treat when a mystifying history includes both attempts to take down an American president and a previously vocal allegiance to the left. Perhaps he was merely channeling his inner anti-Trumper or was having a bad day like the rest of us.

Notably, Routh’s Twitter personality added to the confusion. Despite once expressing support for Trump back in 2016, he later lamented the president’s perceived decline. His X account (formerly known as Twitter) has since been suspended, perhaps for his mixed signals about the former president. While he claimed to have voted for Trump, his rants about wishing Trump would ride off into the sunset put some serious doubt on his allegiance. Routh was clearly having an existential crisis as he fluctuated between wanting to rally for the Make America Great Again movement and plotting a violent act against its leader.
Then there’s Routh’s past that reads like a script from a low-budget thriller. In 2002, he had himself a standoff with authorities while armed with an illegal weapon of mass destruction. Fast forward to the current day, and he is caught trying to take a shot at Trump—definitely an improvement in terms of ambition, if not intention. It’s astonishing that someone like Routh could escape behind bars only to plot such a brazen act, suggesting that perhaps some folks really don’t learn from their past mistakes.
His social media postings reveal another layer of inconsistency, with Routh condemning violence while himself engaging in an attempt on Trump’s life. While calling for peace and condemning killing is all well and good, suggesting that he supports Ukraine in a war against Russia only adds to the comedic tragedy of a man lost in his own rants. Routh has even claimed he was willing to go fight in Ukraine, which begs the question—is he really a vigilante for democracy or just an overzealous keyboard warrior trying to impress?
In a world where political violence seems to grab headlines, even leaders like Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky have to step in, expressing relief that Trump is safe. It’s a curious turn of events when a foreign leader is more concerned about Trump’s safety than many Democrats, who might just shrug this off as a political hiccup. Authorities have yet to finalize the charges against Routh, but if past events are any indication, the impending court drama should be less about justice and more about liberal contradictions. The world cannot be blamed for laughing as the actions of a single individual once again demonstrate the absurd, oftentimes theatrical fabric of modern political discourse.
