FBI Under Fire for Mishandling Child Sexual Abuse Investigations

The FBI has once again found itself under fire, and this time, it’s about something that would make any decent American’s blood boil: the mishandling of child sexual abuse investigations. An internal watchdog group has tossed a bucket of cold water on the agency, stating that they really need to step up their game. This report comes over three years after the world collectively gasped when it was revealed that the FBI had full knowledge of Larry Nassar, the now infamous U.S. gymnastics doctor who was abusing young female athletes, and yet did nothing—or rather, did far too little and way too late.

It’s all very conveniently timed, isn’t it? Despite sitting on knowledge of such horror stories, the FBI waited far too long to do anything meaningful. Stay woke, people! The Department of Justice’s Office of Inspector General (OIG) dropped this latest bombshell, reminding everyone that while the FBI may be busy tracking down some non-existent white supremacists in the backyard, children were being abused, and there were leads just sitting there, gathering dust. Sounds like a classic case of misplaced priorities, doesn’t it?

The report outlined multiple lapses in the FBI’s response to allegations, indicating that some suspected child abuse cases seemed to be stuck in limbo. Reports were found without any recent investigative activity or updates, leaving many to wonder if the cases were ever actually taken seriously. Leads went uncovered, and substantial non-compliance with FBI policy was noted. If only the Bureau put as much effort into these investigations as they do into their Twitter campaigns about “equity” and other modern buzzwords, maybe they wouldn’t be in this mess.

It’s hard to take the FBI seriously when they can’t even manage the basic duty of protecting the most vulnerable members of society. Instead of charging in where they’re needed, they seem to prefer the more politically-palatable battles in the culture war. After the Nassar scandal became public, one would think they’d be scrambling to ensure that mistakes like that would never happen again. But alas, here we are, with a report highlighting their shortcomings like a red flag waving obnoxiously in a kid’s face.

What really grinds the gears is the irony that the FBI claims to be fighting against human trafficking and child exploitation while failing to adequately investigate the cases on their own desk. It’s a little rich to tout such a valiant image while letting the most egregious acts of violence against children slip through the cracks. Perhaps the FBI needs to take a hard look in the mirror—or better yet, focus on their original mission rather than chasing after politically expedient narratives.
