In today’s culture, where the term “patriarchy” has become a buzzword spewed out incessantly by progressives, there seems to be a deep disconnect from reality. Recently, a TikTok influencer offered her unique take on the issue of splitting bills with men. According to her, going “50/50” isn’t acceptable because it robs women of the supposed benefits they reap from what she perceives to be a patriarchal world. She feels that it’s the only advantage women get and men shouldn’t seek to eliminate it. This perspective reveals a misunderstanding of equality and the very foundation of the world we live in.
Unlike what some may claim, the so-called oppressive patriarchy is responsible for much of our modern conveniences and our way of life. This isn’t about dismissing women’s contributions or potential, but about acknowledging historical facts. Consider the amenities that many take for granted: houses, infrastructure like bridges and roads, and even vehicles. These are marvels that society, traditionally described as patriarchal, has given us. The idea that civilization itself, built and maintained by hard work, creativity, and governance, is merely a tool of oppression is a narrative built on shaky ground.
While there are imperfections in any societal structure and room for improvement, it is essential to understand the broader picture. The comforts of electricity, indoor plumbing, and the principles of democracy and freedom were not created by magic. They were established by societies striving for advancement, flourishing under systems that some voices today deem tyrannical. It is rather ironic, yet convenient, for critics to disparage a system while enjoying everything it provides — it’s akin to biting the hand that feeds you.
Furthermore, the call for equality today is often selective, where empowerment is demanded only when it suits. When choices come with responsibilities, some are quick to fall back on the age-old gender dynamics they allegedly oppose. Equal treatment and opportunity should mean just that — equal in rights but also in duties. Real equality cannot cherry-pick the perks while discarding responsibilities that don’t align with one’s narrative.
As the discourse around gender dynamics continues to evolve, it’s crucial to tether arguments to reality and historical truths. Dismissing the system that has fostered societal growth under the guise of challenging it undermines genuine progress. It would be far more productive to build upon the framework that has proven its efficacy instead of tearing it down with misguided critiques. In this conversation, returning to the core values of fairness and appreciation might pave a more coherent path forward.
