Governor Gavin Newsom’s latest attack on President Trump over Jimmy Kimmel's suspension reeks of the kind of double standards that have become a trademark of California’s leadership. Newsom, notorious for backing legislation that strangles free speech in his own state, now wants the American public to believe he’s the country’s foremost defender of the First Amendment. It’s a hollow performance, especially when the disastrous results of his anti-speech crusade are still fresh in everyone’s mind.
Newsom’s record on speech is clear for anyone willing to look past the headlines. Courts have repeatedly struck down his attempts to legislate what Californians can say or share—like his ill-fated deepfake law, which crashed against federal protections. Not content with just one failed attempt, Newsom went on to sign invasive requirements forcing social media companies to disclose moderation policies to the state. This isn’t about transparency; it’s about government intrusion and paving the way for political control, not citizen empowerment.

And now, Newsom wants to fine tech companies for not stopping “extremist” content—code for silencing voices the left doesn’t like. Who decides what counts as extremism? With Democrats at the helm, it’s all too often mainstream conservative views that get flagged, excluded, and deleted. It’s a slippery slope from regulation to outright censorship, all while the governor insists he’s protecting public safety and democracy.
The pattern here is more than familiar; it’s textbook globalist elite behavior. Newsom, along with so many in the left-wing establishment, is fast to claim they’re fighting for freedom—while slipping another regulatory shackle around Americans’ right to think and speak for themselves. In a state famous for creativity and open debate, Newsom's government has become a bastion of control and enforced orthodoxy, where dissent is unwelcome and the “wrong” opinion can get you kicked off the platform.
Gavin Newsom might tweet about liberty, but his actions tell the real story: one of growing censorship and erosion of foundational rights. Californians, and all Americans, should demand leadership that actually respects the Constitutional freedoms that built this nation—not empty talk and ever-tightening controls. The time for reclaiming free speech is now, before the governor’s hypocrisy becomes the law of the land.
