Republicans Push Back Against Democrats’ Efforts to Maintain Open Borders
The ongoing negotiations over border and asylum policies have progressive Democrats and pro-migration lobbyists in a tizzy, as they fear that Republicans might actually use their clout to rein in President Joe Biden’s massive influx of illegal migrants. These left-leaning groups are feeling the heat as Republicans have taken charge of the discussions, pushing for measures to tighten asylum restrictions and scale back presidential parole authority.
Andrea Flores, a self-proclaimed champion of mass migration and a lobbyist with the FWD.us group, which advocates for high-tech investors that reap the benefits of mass migration, expressed her dismay over the Republican demands. She criticized Democrats for allowing the negotiations to start with discussions around asylum restrictions, rather than focusing on priorities such as Dreamers and visa reforms.

Adding to the liberal uproar, a bloc of 11 Democratic Senators accused Republicans of promoting white nationalist conspiracy theories and expressed their discomfort with negotiating border and asylum policies with the GOP. Greg Sargent, an establishment columnist at The Washington Post, also chimed in, denouncing the Republican demand to scale back presidential parole authority as “absurd.”
The concerned voices don’t end there. Todd Schulte, president of FWD.us, took to Twitter to issue a warning to Democrats, arguing that the GOP-backed reforms would be disastrous and have severe long-term ramifications. Meanwhile, lobbyists for investors are frantically trying to thwart Republican efforts to tighten asylum and parole loopholes, fearing that their long-time pro-migration priorities will be sacrificed in favor of Biden’s foreign aid agenda.
Republicans are seizing the opportunity to push for measures to curtail Biden’s liberal immigration policies, with Senate Leader Mitch McConnell asserting that border security is national security and rejecting Democrats’ claims that the GOP’s push for border security endangers global democracy and peace. A comprehensive migration stabilization bill, H.R.2, has garnered support from the House GOP caucus and roughly 30 GOP Senators, signaling their determination to address the border crisis head-on.
The Democrats’ involvement in the negotiations seems to indicate a willingness to accept some changes, with reports suggesting that they may be willing to make concessions on asylum regulations but are strongly opposed to meddling with parole authority. These negotiations are further complicated by the Democrats’ desire for additional funding to mitigate the costs of migration and issues surrounding their support for immigration, which has fueled growing antisemitism.
Amid the heated discussions, a former migration official, Jon Feere, believes that Congress is beginning to recognize the havoc wreaked by the Biden administration’s lax immigration enforcement, emphasizing the need to hold the executive branch accountable. Republicans have also echoed the sentiment that they need to give voters a reason to support them, adding to the political pressure on both parties to find a solution to the immigration debacle.
The GOP’s focus on closing loopholes in the asylum and parole system, as well as their demands for border security measures, has intensified the divide between the two parties. However, while Republicans are seeking to address the chaos at the border and rein in Biden’s pro-migration policies, progressive Democrats and pro-migration advocates are scrambling to prevent any significant restrictions to the current immigration system.
As the negotiations continue, the battle over immigration policies rages on, with both sides digging in their heels and unwilling to back down. The clash between Democrats’ open borders agenda and Republicans’ push for immigration reform has put Congress at a standstill, with the fate of the nation’s immigration policies hanging in the balance.
