Republicans in Washington state are not happy with the Biden administration’s plan to reintroduce grizzly bears into the North Cascades National Park. Led by Congressional Western Caucus Chairman Dan Newhouse, six GOP lawmakers have asked the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and the National Park Service to allow more time for the public to voice their concerns about the proposal. They are also requesting additional in-person meetings with community members who would be impacted by the plan.
The Republicans argue that the introduction of grizzlies could endanger the safety of local communities. They point out that grizzlies are not the cuddly creatures portrayed in internet memes, but rather apex predators that can weigh up to 650 pounds. They are known to have “unfavorable human/bear interactions” and do not adapt well to living near human communities. The commissioners of Chelan County have also expressed their opposition to the plan, citing concerns about public safety, economic development, and recreation opportunities.
The Washington Cattlemen’s Association, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, and Public Lands Council have also voiced their opposition to the reintroduction of grizzly bears. They argue that the species could have a devastating impact on cattle in the region.
It would be wise for the Biden administration to reconsider this plan. The safety and livelihoods of the local communities should be the top priority, and it seems that the concerns raised by Republicans and various organizations have not been adequately addressed. It is important to remember that grizzlies are wild animals that belong in the wilderness, not in close proximity to human settlements.
