The Democratic National Convention in Chicago is serving as a stage for Vice President Kamala Harris to attempt a much-needed reboot of her floundering campaign. Unfortunately, help seems in short supply, as even heavyweight endorsers like former President Bill Clinton and media mogul Oprah Winfrey couldn’t generate enough enthusiasm to mask the glaring failures of the past three and a half years.
The Democrats, undeterred by the absence of compelling endorsement, trotted out Sheriff Javier Salazar from Bexar County, Texas, to lend his support to Harris. However, the performance soon devolved into something approaching comedy, as Salazar offered a series of dubious claims about Harris’ effectiveness at the southern border that would make even a contestant on a reality show question their credibility.

Salazar took the stage attempting to draw a contrast between Harris’ border policies and those of former President Donald Trump. He asserted, nonsensically, that while Trump uses photo ops with law enforcement for self-promotion, Harris has been a tireless warrior against border crime. The irony here is that a quick trip down memory lane reveals Salazar has previously criticized the Biden administration’s handling of the border situation and demanded action, which clearly undermines his newfound loyalty to Harris.
In his moment in the spotlight, Salazar claimed Harris had “fought border crime for years,” had traveled to Mexico to confront drug traffickers, and had put those same traffickers behind bars. This declaration was met with incredulity as the crowd must have collectively wondered if past performances were being magically erased from memory. Newsflash: Just because someone says something doesn’t make it true—especially when the record suggests the opposite.
Equally perplexing was Salazar’s apparent lack of memory regarding his own calls for help from the Biden administration just two years ago. Back then, he was practically begging for boots on the ground to tackle the very issues he claims Harris has been addressing all along. This kind of flip-flopping is diabolical, especially when one considers that digital footprints don’t fade away. One might think that a supposed law enforcement figure would know better than to step into the arena brandishing such evident contradictions.
The Democrats’ strategy of sending out their most questionable spokesperson only serves to highlight the cracks in Harris’ campaign, a campaign that has, quite frankly, left a lot to be desired. The notion that they could unravel her myriad failures on stage without a hint of irony speaks volumes about the inner workings of the Democratic Party. Perhaps they’ve come to terms with their candidate’s unpopularity, realizing it will take more than star power to validate the dismal record she’s amassed. The truth is, the left continues to ignore reality at their peril, and with every embarrassing endorsement, they dig their own grave a little deeper.
