The race for the Democratic presidential nomination is heating up, and Vice President Kamala Harris is already campaigning hard for the teachers’ unions. Just days after President Biden waved goodbye to his campaign, Harris took center stage before the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), the nation’s second-largest teachers’ union. As if her standing ovation from the far-left wasn’t clear enough, she lined up firmly behind their agenda—complete with provisions for radical gender ideology, the infamous critical race theory, and even a pinch of expanded abortion access for good measure.
Harris’s rallying cry for union support and her unyielding allegiance to the AFT and the National Education Association (NEA), the largest teachers’ union, suggest a familiar pattern. These organizations have spent millions propping up far-left causes and candidates, and Harris appears eager to fulfill her role as puppet for their agenda. With these unions firmly in her corner, Harris isn’t just passing through; she’s looking to steer the Democratic ship straight into the waters of identity politics and leftist education.

During her speech, Harris lamented the supposed “extremists” who allegedly threaten voting rights and public safety. Yet, she failed to specify who these nefarious figures were. Instead, she predictably railed against legislation like Florida’s education reform that merely stops inappropriate topics from being discussed in the classroom before children reach an age of understanding. This legally mandated sanity is branded by Democrats as a nefarious “don’t say gay” law, but remove the lefty lexicon and it becomes clear: it’s merely common sense.
Not content to merely talk the talk, Harris lavished praise on AFT president Randi Weingarten, a controversial figure known for her integral role in locking down schools during the pandemic. While children were stuck at home, left to stagnate academically, Weingarten pushed to keep the doors shut long after it was safe to reopen. Critics have pointed out that Weingarten has made a career of undermining parents, students, and educational progress, yet there Harris stood, applauding her with enthusiasm. For anyone paying attention, the optics suggest a blatant disregard for the very students they claim to represent.
Of course, the American public knows that this is not Harris’s first rodeo when it comes to pandering to teachers’ unions. Back in 2019, she skipped along with union demands against school choice initiatives in Los Angeles. Her track record in education reflects nothing short of an eagerness to throw taxpayer dollars at the unions while racking up monumental spending proposals. The push to dramatically raise teacher salaries is presented as generous, but it’s merely a calculated appeal to unions, costing taxpayers nearly $315 billion over ten years. And her support for making college free? That’s a delightful gift wrapped in fiscal irresponsibility—an expense that sets many a taxpayer’s hair on fire.
As Harris prepares for what many anticipate will be a chaotic primary battle, her entrenchment with the teacher unions and commitment to their needs speaks volumes. No one can ignore her history of radical education policies, misguided pandemic-related decisions, or her vast spending plans that all lead back to the wallets of hardworking Americans. While Harris might be positioning herself as a champion of the people, one must ask: whose people? The families struggling to navigate a broken educational system, or the unions padding their own pockets? It seems the latter might be more of her focus as she hits the campaign trail.
