However, while they are deployed overseas, many of these soldiers create deep bonds with stray animals that provide comfort and companionship during tough times. It’s a heartwarming yet bittersweet experience when these service members must leave their four-legged friends behind—something Robert Miserri, co-founder of the organization Paws of War, understands all too well.
During deployment, the emotional weight can be incredibly heavy. Soldiers might be well-prepared for combat situations, but little do they expect to forge a connection with a playful puppy or a needy kitten. As homesickness creeps in, these animals can become rays of sunshine in the chaos, brightening the darkest of days. But when it’s time to head home, the struggle begins as goodbyes not only involve their fellow troops but also the furry friends they have grown to love. It’s a painful farewell, but that’s where Paws of War steps in.
Paws of War is a remarkable organization based on Long Island. They exist to create pathways for service members to bring home their beloved pets from overseas. They tackle this mission with determination, sometimes navigating dangerous terrain to rescue these animals. Recently, Paws of War was honored with the Fox Nation award for its service to veterans.
