But surprise, surprise: only after the right security guarantees were brought to the table did the deal even stand a chance. Without America’s blessing, the plan was dead in the water. Once again, it’s U.S. muscle holding the line in a dangerous world.

Thankfully, hard-dealing negotiators only approved the handover when the right security promises were locked in—and that finally got President Trump on board.
